Educator Resources for 1001 Inventions

The Michigan Science Center is committed to supporting teachers and their students who will be the next generation of inventors and innovators.  The resources found on this page can be used to enhance the student experience at 1001 Inventions and connect all out-of-class learning back to current curricula.

Additionally, all educators are encouraged to attend MiSci’s Teacher Professional Development workshop series this school year.

BEFORE YOUR VISIT

3rd – 12th GRADE

What Does a Scientist Look Like? Lesson Plan:
This pre and post-visit activity will frame students’ 1001 Inventions experience and get them thinking about different types of scientists.  Students will test their stereotypes about what a scientist looks like and does by comparing and contrasting two different models and engaging in reflective conversation with their peers.

Suggested Time:  One class period before your visit, one class period after your visit.

Get to Know 1001:
These readings and corresponding activities will provide great background knowledge for students prior to their visit.  Explore diverse inventors, try out invention designs, and learn more about the seven zones found within the exhibit.  Educator tip – split the class into groups to read about the zones, then have them report back out to the class on their findings!

DURING YOUR VISIT

3rd – 5th GRADE:

Primary School Activity Sheets
For a more structured visit to 1001 Inventions, send students on a scavenger hunt using our elementary and middle school activity sheets.  These sheets prompt students to try all the exhibit’s games and interactive features found and encourage active reading and listening!

Suggested Time: 45 minutes, during visit to 1001 Inventions

3rd – 12th GRADE

1001 Inventions Educator Guide:
This guide contains general exhibit information, a cultural terminology guide, and hands-on activities to engage students in the invention process after their visit to 1001 Inventions.

Suggested Time:  One to three class periods after visit
