Melissa Helberg is an 11th grade biology teacher and the science department lead teacher at Voyageur College Prep High School in southwest Detroit. This school year Melissa launched the school’s first AP Biology course and started the school’s FIRST robotics team, where their students went on to win the Rookie Inspiration Award, Rookie All Star Award and qualified for states. This summer she will work with the Robotics team along with a collaboration with GM to design a rainwater collection system to be used at the Cadillac Urban Garden in southwest Detroit.
Melissa has been in love with science, and has been a self-proclaimed nerd, for as long as she can remember. She attended the University of Michigan for both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees. She has seen firsthand what wonderful careers are possible within STEM, and her goal is to bring her passion for science to all her students.
She has been involved with other school initiatives such as:
- STEM Career Days for students to meet other STEM professionals
- Fund raisers to provide every scholar with a calculator
Melissa makes the word “nerd” in her class a point of pride. Her STEM Vision is for all of her students to be successful and excited about STEM. She puts her heart into bringing opportunities to her kids so they can see how fulfilling a STEM career can be and will leave her classroom with the necessary skills and knowledge to pursue those opportunities.
