Our December 2016 Volunteer of the Month, Imani Greason is a 9th grade high school student at University High School in Ferndale, MI. Imani is 14 years old and started volunteering this year while she was still in the 8th grade. Imani can be found in Kids Town or in the IMAX® theatre on Sundays. Read below to find out why Imani wanted to start volunteering at such a young age.
I started volunteering at the Science Center earlier this year because I am excited about science and helping others to learn too. I hope to one day have a career in medicine and know the importance of science in this field. I look for ways to learn, and what better way than to be surrounded by hands-on science. I also help others to learn and have fun too. I have always enjoyed working with small children, so helping our little guests in Kids Town is a joy. I help the children to learn and explore in the library, the play restaurant, and with activities. In the IMAX® theater, I get to enjoy learning about things such as animals and national parks, while being a host for guests to view the movies.
Starting as a volunteer in the same year that I began high school is an excellent opportunity for me to gain valuable experience for my future college applications. Volunteering gives me experience in customer service, time management, and builds leadership skills. I appreciate the opportunity that the Science Center has given me to gain these valuable skills. The staff and other volunteers have been very welcoming to me, and I already feel like part of the Science Center family. I look forward to continuing to volunteer at the Science Center, and all of the exciting experiences to come!
