Blog: Member Profile – The Stella Family

This month, we’re highlighting MiSci members as part of Member Appreciation Month. Learn more here.

The Michigan Science Center has been a fixture in the lives of the Stella family for more than five years. In fact, Daniel (age 8) and Silvia (age 6), have been members nearly their whole lives.

The Detroit family visited the Michigan Science Center when it first opened in 2012 and immediately saw the value in membership.

“We visit the Science Center frequently,” says Olga, Daniel and Silvia’s mother. “We see the Science Center as a resource for our family and we like having access to an environment that encourages learning through play.”

One of the family’s favorite member benefits is discounts on camp. Both Daniel and Silvia look forward to attending Summer Science Camp every year.

“It’s one of the best camps around,” Olga says. “The kids never get bored and the staff goes above and beyond to make camp a great experience. They learn as much over the summer as they do during the school year.”

Even when camp ends in August, the Science Center’s commitment to a wide variety of hands-on science education keeps Olga, her husband Dante, and the kids coming back at least once a month, sometimes more frequently, as the weather gets colder.

“The experience at the Science Center is playful,” Olga explains. “It keeps my kids interested in all aspects of science. It’s a place they’re always excited to visit.”

While Olga and Dante appreciate the educational benefits of a Science Center membership, Daniel and Silvia also have their list of Science Center favorites. They enjoy building in STEM Playground, watching live demos on the Science Stage and visiting the US Steel Fun Factory.

“The Science Center offers a practical way of looking at and thinking about science,” Olga says. “You can easily spend hours exploring everything it has to offer. It’s a hive of fun activity that’s great for families.”
