Explainers
A paid opportunity for Detroit high school students to dive into STEM, develop leadership skills, and make an impact at the Michigan Science Center. After Explainer’s graduate high school, they have the opportunity to join the Mi-Sci Education Team as an Educator!
Who are the Explainers?
Explainers are an essential part of the Mi-Sci team! These high school students are paid to learn science center operations—everything from guiding visitors through exhibits to supporting live shows. We’ll teach you how to engage with guests, answer their questions, and spark their curiosity about science.
Training and Pathways
The program starts with 12 weeks of training through each pathway: exhibits, stage shows, theaters, and guest services. Next, you’ll choose one pathway to focus on and work alongside our experienced Mi-Sci staff, who will mentor you throughout this year-long opportunity.
Skills and Career Development
In addition to STEM knowledge, you’ll gain valuable communication, leadership, and teamwork skills that will benefit you in any career path. Your time as an Explainer will help you learn how to present your strengths and grow your network. At the end of the program, you’ll showcase what you’ve learned.
