Hazel Anderson

Plant Conservation, Biogeography, Spatial Ecology at Michigan State University

I am Ph.D. student in the MSU Department of Integrative Biology & Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior Program. As a scientist, her research interests include interdisciplinary methods to improve plant conservation, such as data science, open science, plant community ecology, spatial ecology, remote sensing, and biogeography.  She is also interested in exploring how intersectional environmentalism, inclusive conservation, traditional knowledge, and natural/social science collaboration can be used to improve conservation.

When I’m  not doing research, I am involved as an assistant coordinator of the MSU Science Festival and Communications Coordinator for Conservation Cooridor. I am also chair MSU SciComm’s Science Policy Committee, created the Michigan Science Communication/Outreach/Engagement Slack Community, and is passionate about increasing diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice in STEAM.

Tell us about a hobby or activity you enjoy outside your STEM career.

I like to take pictures of plants (a plant photographer if you will). I also love accumulating and reading books. My goal is to have a home library, eventually.
