Maria Fields

Engineering student at University of Michigan/Major Industrial and Operations Engineering with a minor in Computer Science

In 2020, Maria was named a finalist for the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science competition for high school seniors, Regeneron Science Talent Search (STS), for her original, independent breast cancer research which revealed differential expression between African American and white women triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) patients. She is a Stamps Scholar, which is a scholarship that covers both tuition and board and an M-Engin scholar for MSTEM Academies at Michigan. She is a U.S. Presidential Scholar and graduated summa cum laude from high school.||She is the founder and president of a student organization on campus dedicated to working with local and Detroit communities to improve childhood literacy and increase diversity in STEM sponsored by her non-profit G.R.O.W. (Generate Real Opportunities and Wonder) Tutoring Program. Her freshman year, Maria was a research assistant in the “”In Silico Drug Design For Pain and Addiction Therapeutics”” lab through the Undergraduate Opportunities Research Program and she continues to engage in research. She also is an Engineering Representative of Central Student Government.

Tell us about a hobby or activity you enjoy outside your STEM career.

I enjoy competing in pageants! Within recent years I have competed in the Miss USA/Universe and Miss America system. In addition to holding titles with the Miss America system I was also awarded their first-ever STEM scholarship at Miss Michigan’s Outstanding Teen. I enjoy watching movies, cooking, knitting, and sewing.
