Sponsored by Bank of America, new “Science of Safety” initiative explores the STEM behind firefighting, emergency medicine and public safety technology
DETROIT, Mich. — May 26, 2026 — As part of the nationwide America 250 celebration commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the Michigan Science Center (Mi-Sci) is launching “Science of Safety,” a new summer initiative honoring Detroit’s first responders through free museum access and educational STEM programming focused on the science and technology behind public safety. The program is generously sponsored by Bank of America.
Beginning today, May 26, through Labor Day on September 7, Detroit police officers, firefighters, emergency responders and their families will receive free general admission to Mi-Sci with a valid ID.
Throughout the summer, Mi-Sci will also offer special programming and demonstrations designed to showcase the STEM principles used daily by Detroit’s hometown heroes to protect and serve the community.
Programming will include:
- Live science shows for all ages exploring topics such as the physics and chemistry of fire suppression, the biology of emergency medicine and the engineering behind fire and tactical gear.
- “Engines and Cruisers” Weekend, a special pre-Independence Day event featuring a Detroit Fire Department fire truck and Detroit Police Department technology vehicles parked on-site for hands-on exploration.
- The “Hero Tech Showcase” is a curated display featuring police and fire equipment that allows visitors to experience public safety technology up close.
In addition to free summer admission, Mi-Sci will also offer discounted memberships for first responders and their families, providing unlimited visits through the end of 2026 and into 2027, along with exclusive museum store discounts.
With “Science of Safety,” Mi-Sci aims to create meaningful learning experiences that bring the public and first responders together while enhancing STEM career awareness among young people. The initiative also reflects the museum’s ongoing commitment to Detroit’s civic heroes and the future of educational equity.
