As Detroit revs up for the 2025 Auto Show, there’s an extra spark of excitement in the air—because the Michigan Science Center (Mi-Sci) is rolling in with interactive, family-friendly fun! From January 11 to January 20, we’ll be transforming 4,000 square feet at the show into a pop-up science playground where kids (and grown-ups!) can learn, play, and explore the engineering marvels behind automotive innovation.
What to Expect at the Michigan Science Center Exhibit
- Build, Tinker, and Test in the “Nüdel Kart” Zone
Ever wonder how a simple wheel-and-axle works? Our Nüdel Kart exhibit is designed to let budding inventors build and test “cars” using colorful pool noodles, wooden axles, and wheels of all sizes. Think of it as your child’s very own concept car design studio—no driver’s license required!- Hands-On Design: Kids can experiment with different wheel sizes, axles, and “chassis” to see how their custom creations handle imaginary roads.
- Real-World Connection: Discover how the same principles used in this playful activity power the futuristic vehicles you’ll see on the auto show floor.
- Giant Foam Blocks for Creative Construction
Need more ways to build big? We’re bringing along our giant foam blocks, perfect for younger scientists who love to stack, shape, and design. These soft, oversized pieces let kids safely immerse themselves in the world of engineering. Who knows? They might just create the next big innovation in transportation—at least in foam form! - Rideable Models and Prototyping
Take your creativity for a spin—literally. Some of our contraptions can be assembled and ridden around, so little engineers can get a feel for prototyping and testing. It’s a fun, hands-on introduction to the processes real automotive engineers use every day.\ - The Portable Planetarium
Cars aren’t the only vehicles we can explore at the Auto Show. Step into our Portable Planetarium to launch your imagination into outer space! Learn about rovers, space travel, and the far-reaching frontiers of human exploration. After seeing the latest terrestrial vehicles, take a peek at what might be traveling above Earth.
Insider Tip: Prime Viewing of the Test Tracks
Our 4,000-square-foot area is positioned so you can catch a glimpse of the thrilling test tracks right from the Mi-Sci exhibit space. Talk about a front-row seat to automotive action!
