Event features evening of workshops, tabletop activities and demonstrations
Detroit, Mich., March 21, 2022– Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan (GSSM) are invited to explore science during a special event at the Michigan Science Center (MiSci). MiSci and BASF Corporation will present “Kaleidoscope of Science” Saturday, April 2 from 5 – 9 p.m. at the museum. The event will feature an evening of workshops, tabletop activities, take-home projects and demonstrations and is open to a range of Girl Scout levels, including pre-K, Ambassadors, Seniors, Juniors, Brownies, Daisies and Cadettes, as well as their families and volunteers.
“MiSci is committed to putting youth at the center of science by showcasing the wealth of practical applications and career options available to the next generation,” said MiSci President and CEO, Dr. Christian Greer. “We are thrilled to partner with BASF to offer this special program to Girl Scouts to inspire interest and promote opportunities in STEM.”
Activities include:
- BASF Playful Polymers – a slime-making workshop where participants will learn about polymers.
- BASF Rainbow Connections – a lesson in how colors can move and change with chromatography.
- BASF Happy Hands – a take-home project where participants will learn about the science behind lotion as they make their own.
- Leap Bots – a lesson in springs and mechanical engineering as participants make their own jumping toys.
- Secret Codes – writing and solving secret codes by making a cipher wheel.
- Program a Friend – learning about computer coding by “coding” a friend through a maze.
- Helicopters – a lesson in flight as participants make their own paper helicopters.
Shows include:
- Science Stage Show – live, interactive science presentation
- MathAlive! Stage Show – math-focused, live demonstration
- Planetarium – Other Worlds, There’s No Place Like Earth – immersive film that explores the solar system
- Toyota Engineering Theater – Volcanoes: The Fires of Creation – 3D film on the worldwide impact of volcanoes on modern life
Event tickets are $15 and must be purchased through GSSM. Cost includes admission as well as patch and activity takeaways. Children under two are free. Tickets to the planetarium and Toyota Engineering Theater shows will be available to Girl Scouts and their families at no-charge thanks to the generous support of BASF.
